Azores, the first archipelago in the world to be certified

The Azores are a destination for nature and experiences, focused on the preservation of resources and the preservation of the archipelago's natural legacy.

This path, earned it the distinction of the first archipelago in the world to win the seal "Sustainable Tourism Destination", under the EarthCheck Sustainable Destination programme. This way, the Azores entered the short list of sustainable tourism destinations in the world.

This distinction was just the beginning of a path of continuous improvement, focusing on the present, but also on the future, with the main goal of raising these sustainability standards and in 2024 obtain a new certification, as a sustainable tourist destination according to Azores DMO, the entity responsible for the Sustainability Management of the Azores Tourist Destination.

COMMITMENT TO SUSTAINABILITY

The Azores Sustainability Charter is an initiative of the Government of the Azores to strengthen the sustainable development of the entire territory. It aims to support the adoption of the principles of the 2030 Agenda in an inclusive and comprehensive manner in the various sectors of society. The Primer is perfectly aligned with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, having a fundamental role for their materialization in the Azores. This is an important contribution to a fairer, more dignified, more inclusive and sustainable world.
